Bristol Motor Speedway
When Speedway Motorsports Incorporated (SMI) of Charlotte, North Carolina, purchased the Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS) they immediately began an expansion process to increase the seating capacity and to upgrade the facilities to provide more amenities. Scheduling was a major challenge on this project. BMS hosts two (2) National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) events annually, one in March/April and one in August. The expansion and renovation work had to be sequenced and performed in such a manner that the facility was safe and useable for both race weekends. With the first and second phases of our work at BMS each lasting approximately one (1) year, the first two phases were divided into six-month “sub phases” that had to be performed within the six (6) month window between the two (2) NASCAR weekends. Because the race dates are set a year in advance and all tickets are sold (even for the new expansions) there could be no extension of time. On one extremely tight phase of work, Rentenbach crews worked eighty (80) straight days through all kinds of inclement weather.
The third phase encompassed the construction of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) dragway and a four-story building containing VIP suites, scorers suites and administrative space.
The fourth phase included a 13,000-seat upper deck addition in turns one and two of the half-mile track. We also constructed seven (7) new elevator towers, each more than one hundred fifty (150) feet tall, that surround the grandstands and provide access to seating and luxury suites. It was a total team effort from start of design to completion of construction.
