Two Projects Win Best of 2009 Awards
Thursday, December 10, 2009

On December 10, 2009, Rentenbach received awards for two projects at the University of Tennessee from South Central Construction Magazine, a McGraw-Hill publication.

Primary considerations in the competition were construction innovation, means and methods, project safety, schedule maintenance and quality control.

The Howard Baker Center for Public Policy, Knoxville, Tennessee, received the “Best of 2009” Award of Excellence – Higher Education.
The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy has the worthy goals of creating a better understanding of American democracy and of fostering a greater appreciation of the vital importance of public service. This 51,500 SF, 3-story academic building’s most prominent design feature is its large dome over a central atrium. The first floor features a large, open exhibition space, an auditorium, and a high tech resource center. The second floor is fully dedicated to administrative office space and classrooms. The third floor features more functional offices and student meeting space, but its main feature is an office for former Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee and his staff.

The design team for this project was McCarty Holsaple McCarty.

Neyland Stadium Improvements, Phase 1C, Sequence 1 received the “Best of 2009” Award of Merit – Sports/Recreation.

Neyland Stadium located on the campus of the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, was initially designed by our founder, Major Tom Rentenbach, in 1946. Rentenbach Constructors Incorporated has subsequently constructed 15 additions to the stadium. The scope included constructing club seating on the west side, rebuilding the concessions and restrooms on two concourse levels, widening all concourses, renovating the press box and suites on the west side, and refacing the suites with new glass. The scissor ramps that were prominently located in the middle of the stadium were removed and replaced with large stairs and one additional elevator. The project also extended the older sky boxes out over to center ways of Phillip Fulmer Way relocating the press boxes to level five, and turning level four into the West Club. On levels six and seven we upgraded the suites with new improved anti-glare glass, new ceilings, walls, lights, cabinets and flooring, and extended those levels out towards the west cantilevering over Phillip Fulmer Way. The Concourse below, where the scissor ramps were removed, received new concession stands, rest rooms and other amenities buildings.

The design team for this super fast-track project was a joint venture between McCarty Holsaple McCarty and Ross Bryan Associates.
