Our History

Established in Knoxville in 1946, Rentenbach Engineering Company was founded by T.J. Rentenbach after supervising much of the war-time construction of the City of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as well as the majority of the manufacturing facilities that housed the “Manhattan Project” for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. His goal in establishing Rentenbach as a company, which provided both engineering and construction services, was to blend the integrity of a professional engineer with the talent of a skilled craftsman.

T.J. Rentenbach stressed excellence in the work bearing his name, and possessed a strong commitment to building business relationships founded on both competent execution and professional integrity.

Along the way, the identity of Rentenbach Engineering Company and that of another corporate subsidiary – Rentenbach Development Company (a design entity) – evolved into Rentenbach Constructors Incorporated, the name under which the present-day construction services firm is known.

In response to our many clients’ needs, a full-service regional office was established in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1971 to serve North and South Carolina and Virginia. In 2008, a regional office was established in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In 2013, Rentenbach merged with, and became a family company of The Christman Company, a century-old, nationally-recognized construction firm based in Michigan, to enable strategic growth and enhancement of the two firms’ mutual southeast U.S. capabilities and services. As a result of the merger, Rentenbach evolved from a family-owned to an employee and management-owned business model, while the corporate philosophies of integrity, long-term local relationships, craftsmanship, and customer service shared by Rentenbach and Christman resulted in an alignment valuable for customers and employees alike.

Today, Rentenbach is a widely diversified contractor that annually completes numerous industrial, educational, office, medical, retail, and institutional projects. Together with Christman, the firm’s capabilities have grown to include a variety of other markets as well, including historic preservation and adaptive reuse, power generation and real estate development. The company’s projects range in value from several thousand dollars to more than $100 million dollars, and geographically encompass more than 23 states from Florida to Michigan and North Carolina to Texas. Rentenbach now offers a full range of professional construction services, including construction management, general contracting, design/build, program management, facilities planning and consulting, real estate development, and self-perform skilled trades.

Since its founding in 1946, Rentenbach has developed a substantial base of national and international clients. The company’s satisfied customers offer the greatest testimony to the quality and integrity of its work, with more than 75% of its work performed for repeat clients.
